Seasonal Maintenance Tips for Metal Roofs in Arkansas

December 10, 2024

Metal roofs offer a unique combination of durability, energy efficiency, and long-lasting aesthetics, making them an increasingly popular choice for homeowners throughout the region. If you’ve replaced your roof recently or opted for a metal roof for your new build, we want to help you make sure you get the most of your new roof with our seasonal maintenance tips for metal roofs in Arkansas.

Our team of experts at PermaSteel has been providing high-quality home improvement services in Central Arkansas for nearly 15 years. We’re a family owned business, and our priority is making sure our neighbors get quality products, installed with the latest industry techniques, that will last for many years to come. Though metal roofs can withstand harsh Arkansas weather, and are known to last anywhere from 40-70 years, there are seasonal maintenance tips we can provide to protect your investment and ensure your roof remains in good condition!

Routine Inspections

Ideally, you should have your metal roof inspected and cleaned by a professional once a year or every couple of years. They can perform a thorough check of the roofing, looking for loose or damaged panels or trim, check for scratching or rusting, or look for broken seams. With professional inspection, these potential hazards to the longevity of your roof can be identified and easily repaired! Have questions about inspections or the work our team can provide when it comes to protecting your metal roof? Let us know!

Clear Debris

The Arkansas spring and early summer seasons can bring beautiful weather, but also lots and lots of rain and even high winds. This can lead to broken tree branches, fallen leaves, and other debris to build up on your roof. If too much debris builds up on your roof without being cleared away, this can cause moisture to become trapped beneath the debris, potentially leading to corrosion. It is important to gently remove built up debris with a leaf blower or soft-bristle broom as soon as you can.

Trimming tree branches that extend over your roof is one way to keep branches from breaking and landing on your roof. It can also keep high winds from causing the branches to scratch against the paint on your roof.

Keep It Clean

Metal roofing can be cleaned with soap, water, and microfiber towels. Keeping the panels clean by washing off tree sap and other build up is a great way to maintain the integrity of the paint and coating that prevents rust and corrosion. It’s also important to keep your gutters and drains cleaned out. Leaving your gutters and drains clogged with leaves, sticks, and other items will prevent proper drainage and potentially cause water to backup onto your roof. This can lead to corrosion and rusting.

Remove Snow and Ice

Though Central Arkansas doesn’t typically see heavy snowfall, occasionally we will see decent snowfall and we frequently deal with ice. Many metal roofs are designed to prevent build up of snow and ice. However, routine inspections will tell you if any part of your roof might be damaged, preventing snow and ice from sliding properly off the roof. If snow or ice does build up, it is important to not use metal tools to try and remove it. This could scratch the metal. If you have questions about roof pitching or preventing snow build up, let our team of experts know!

Treat Scratches, Rust, or Corrosion

At PermaSteel, we use the highest-quality materials that are resistant to rust. However, if you notice rust around fasteners, metal bends, or roof seams, you can use a wire brush to gently remove the rust. Once the rust is removed, apply primer and metal roof paint to the area. Scratches can be treated similarly. They can be buffed out with mineral spirits, and then repainted. If you need acquiring the proper paint or would like professional assistance, our team can help.

Maintain Proper Insulation

Underlayments and attic insulation are used as a barrier between the metal roof and the structural roof decking. This helps with temperature regulation, energy efficiency, and noise reduction. When routinely inspecting your metal roofing, check on the insulation in your attic space for any signs of water damage that might indicate a leak, falling insulation, or any other signs of damage. If you are not sure what to look for, consider seeking a professional inspection.

The PermaSteel team offers a 50-year guarantee on our products, because we know our quality materials and installation will stand the test of time. Have questions about metal roofing? Call us today!
